Persuaded by a dear friend, I recently translated a few Hindi poems in English and somewhere along the line started enjoying it. In keeping with that mood, here’s my translation of Ram Avtar Tyagi’s ‘<\/span>\u092e\u0947\u0930\u0940 <\/span>\u0925\u0915\u0928 <\/span>\u0909\u0924\u0930 <\/span>\u091c\u093e\u0924\u0940 <\/span>\u0939\u0948<\/span>‘ . Born in March 1925, in Moradabad district (tehsil Sambhal) of the state of Uttar Pradesh in India, he was a post graduate from Delhi University. Famous progressive Hindi poet Ramdhari Singh Dinkar believes that Tyagi’s poetry is a testimony of new experiments in the Hindi language in terms of idioms, phrases and the so-called new age lexicon of the time. but in unconsciousness
\nreached destination effortlessly.<\/span><\/p>\n

Placing a flute on the lips of a crier,<\/span><\/p>\n

I have often seen, makes my desire perish away.<\/span><\/p>\n

Water does not achieve holiness
\nuntil touched by thirsty lips,<\/span><\/p>\n

Without the blessings of a beggar<\/span><\/p>\n

the alms-giver finds no heavenly bliss<\/span><\/p>\n

Quenching one’s own thirst and filling someone’s empty dish with water,<\/span><\/p>\n

I have often seen, makes my pot brim away.<\/span><\/p>\n

The one who tempts to offer freedom<\/span><\/p>\n

such a God needs no praise<\/span><\/p>\n

To be a Veda mantra<\/span><\/p>\n

reverberating in temples, I do not crave.<\/span><\/p>\n
